Common questions

Which scale should I learn first?

C major, because it uses only white keys and lets you focus on fingering rather than on where the black notes are.

Why is F major spelled with B flat rather than A sharp?

Because a scale uses each letter once and in order. Calling it A sharp would use A twice and skip B entirely.

What is the fingering for a major scale?

Usually 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 5 in the right hand, tucking the thumb under after the third note.
